PB Knock Off...

While impulsively rearranging my living room, I ended up pushing two "hand-me-down" shelves together to create a 8' long entertainment/toy organizer/storage unit. The problem..The long 8' of empty wall above. I really wanted something the same length of the shelves and something large. My mind drifted back to something I saw in PB's recent catalog...
Eight feet long, neutral, not to distracting from the t.v below - What's not to love about it? Oh Yeah the $300 price tag.
But would I pay $300 for this...No. Sorry PB, but How hard could it be to make something similar? Not very!

Want to know how you can do it too? Stay tuned for a tutorial! I have to go now.....nap time is almost over (sigh).

Tutorial here
This is not used to create the SAME picture from PB, but something like it - inspired by what I saw at PB. The image I used is from LIFE magazine online. These "reproductions" are NOT for sale.

  19. <-- My husband email account ! :) I am literally working on this project as I type! Two logistical questions: how did you get the entire grid of papers to line up properly? Also, the home depot by me does not have a burnt sienna paint or glaze; approximately what color would you recommend? I don't want it to be crazy dark... If you could respond as soon as possible, it would help a ton. Thanks,

  20. The Dude,
When you put your images together just "eyeball" it. I had a tube of Burnt Sienna (try an art store) Then just add some water - very watered down - try this out on scrap paper first!
    Good Luck!

  21. Hi Melissa~ Thank you for posting the Plane Project that you did!!!! I started working on mine yesterday and printed off your pics and wanted to let you know that you are missing pieces 15 and 24 from the grid. You have 2 of image 13. I made it work by altering 13 a little for the missing 15, so I'm really happy with how it turned out, but thought you may want to know. I hope this doesn't come across as ungrateful, because I am very grateful that you did the tile work for us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

I recieved this email this morning....I will be fixing the grid images today! (If the grid square was pure white with no images I did leave it out!)

Thanks for letting me know any problems you may run into. This way I can make improvements for those to come!

  29. what types of paint were used for the project?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Most of the color in the plane is transfered (via printer ink!)
I used white and antique white - latex wall paint
and for the aged look I brushed a watered down "burnt sienna" over the entire piece.

  33. I am a beginner on these projects so my question might be dumb but...why a grid? Why not just the whole picture (in 4 sections like PB) and have each section blown up to 24x24 amd then transfer with mod podge to each individual section of wood? I know I must be missing something but wondering just the same?! lol...thanks
    Ginger

  34. Ginger,
Good question! I didn't go that route for $$$ reasons, but it is a great idea! In fact you could have the image blown up to 24x24 and just modge podge the actual image front side up. Then you could go back with paint or sand paper and add a distressed look!

    1. I've been looking everywhere for that image on Life and can't find it! I would like to reproduce something like this but in a smaller form. I can't seem to use the cut up version you provided. Could you direct me to the whole image so I can fit it to full page print outs (kinda like Ginger was talking about)?

  38. I am having the same problem as Lisa. I want to make the pictures smaller to fit two 2X6 planks for my son's room. I can't find a way to print or resize it. Thank you so much. You did an amazing job!!!

  39. I love your work! Unfortunately I am not able to find the link to print the photos to transfer :( I have already painted my boards and realized that I can only find the link to the missing image 15.

  40. Thanks for the tutorial! I am a college football fan and used a picture of my home stadium of Washington for it. Worked great! As to above, I used regular paper printed from my printer and then let it sit overnight till scrubbing off the paper.

  41. Am I doing something wrong? When I print your numbered photos out on 8.5" x 11" paper, it's very pixelated and has two black borders on the left and right side and a light gray one on the left side only. Also, will a laser printer work on the image transfer? THANKS!

  42. I am trying to print the images from my computer at home. I don't see how to print them directly from photobucket...can someone tell me how this was done? Thanks in advance
